Introduction

According to the PMBOK (2008) Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and, techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations from a project. Hence Project Management plays a key role for a project to meet its success by meeting the user requirements within the allocated time and budget.

As a final year Software Engineering under graduate the key concept and practices of project management is studied, researched and successfully applied in various projects during the course of study. The definitions for project management and the importance of it, project management triangle (Time, Cost, Quality) and the skills required for a successful project manager and his role are gathered in prior modules. Moreover the major characteristics of a project and the activities involved in project management are understood and the knowledge gained is used practically in various assignments and projects in last two years.

Starting my career as a software engineer I am expecting to become a project manager in a top IT firm in Sri Lanka in another three years; hence gaining an in-depth knowledge in project management is vital for my professional career. I consider Project Management module in final year of my degree program as a great opportunity for me to build up the skills acquired to become a successful project manager and to learn more techniques in project management knowledge areas. The ability to select the most suitable techniques for a certain problem context is another ability that I am expecting to develop at the end of this module.
